- Abstract:
The article discusses research by the U.S. Agricultural Research Service's Rangeland Resources Research Unit (RRRU) evaluating the effects of cattle grazing, prairie dogs and wildfire on biodiversity in the western Great Plains. The research focused on how to manage rangelands for sustainable beef production. Prairie dogs and wildfires were deemed disturbances to be suppressed. Recent studies however, including a 2007-2008 Pawnee study, reportedly found that these disturbances form an essential part of the grassland's history and future.
