- Abstract:
The article discusses the military efforts of the U.S. Army's 44th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment and one of its officers, Lieutenant Lemon G. Hine, during the early years of the U.S. Civil War. Emphasis is given to an analysis of the Hine's wartime correspondence to better understand the regiment's operations. Specific battles discussed include the Battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas, the Battle of Wilson's Creek in Missouri, and the Second Battle of Manassas in Virginia. Descriptions of life in military camps are also provided. The author goes on to discuss Hine's career as a lawyer.
