- Abstract:
The article focuses on the plan of U.S. ports to expand the Panama Canal in an effort to increase the capacity of container ships that can travel through the canal from 4,400 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEU) to 13,000 TEU. It notes that major ports will spend billions of dollars on terminal and dredging projects. The Department of Agriculture anticipates that commerce flowing through ports will double or triple by 2030 as a result of the expansion project, which is scheduled finish in 2014.
