    • Abstract:
The article discusses increasing hostility toward Islam in Europe in the early 21st century, which is criticized as Islamophobia. The relationship between Islamophobia and ethnic discrimination against Arabs or other non-European Muslim people is discussed. Anti-Islamic sentiments are said to have broad political appeal across the left and right of the political spectrum. Some European liberals and leftists, including supporters of women’s rights and gay rights, have questioned whether Islam is compatible with secularism and Enlightenment values. Many conservative and right-wing Europeans also raise objections to Islam in Europe.
