The article presents news briefs from around the world. The re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in Nigeria was marked by violence that killed 50 people and injured hundreds. Armed forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi were accused of using cluster munitions in their assault on the Libyan city of Misratah. Syrian President Bashar Assad reacted to protests against his rule by announcing he would relax an emergency law that has been in effect for over 47 years. In Japan engineers continued their efforts to bring under control the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was damaged by a March, 2011 earthquake. Several photographs accompany the text.
