      The article discusses champion trees registered by the National Register of Big Trees. Educating the public on protecting and preserving trees in the U.S. is the main goal of the national register. Champion trees are the largest of their species and the nomination and point system on how they are determined is discussed. Some states such as New York also hold their own state tree register. Some of New York's trees are national champions and challengers including a northern bayberry in Nassau County.
