The article examines the use of native, nativar and alien plants in the 21st century gardens in Chicago, Illinois. It notes the crucial role played by the identification and use of native plants in the success of efforts to preserve and restore the natural ecosystems. It cites the effort of restoration ecologist Jack Pizzo to address the question of what a native is. It also discusses Connor Shaw's insight toward nativars.
