      Olthof M, Van Wijngaarden T, Dekker J.H. Pain due to osteoporotic vertebral fracture. Huisarts Wet. 2010;53(8):442-5. Vertebral fractures due to osteoporosis can cause severe pain. The Dutch College of General Practitioners guideline 'Osteoporosis' advises the medical management of such pain, but this is insufficient in some patients. This clinical lesson describes two patients with an insufficient response to commonly used pain management regimens in whom vertebroplasty might be justified. The originally positive opinion about this procedure has been put into perspective by two recent studies. Physiotherapy is an alternative treatment option, because new medicines are still in the research phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

De NHG-Standaard Osteoporose adviseert deze pijn te bestrijden met medicatie. Sommige patiënten komen daarmee echter niet uit. In deze klinische les beschrijven wij twee patiënten die onvoldoende reageerden op de gebruikelijke pijnbestrijdingsschema's en bij wie de vraag rees of een vertebroplastiek gerechtvaardigd zou zijn. Het aanvankelijk positieve oordeel over deze ingreep werd sterk gerelativeerd door twee recente onderzoeken. Een alternatieve behandeloptie is in ieder geval fysiotherapie.
