- Abstract:
An essay is presented discussing the history of the African pygmy slave Ota Benga, who was displayed throughout the United States in the early 1900s. Accounts are given describing how Benga was enslaved from the Belgian Congo, acquired by the anthropologist Samuel Phillips Verner for the St. Louis World's Fair and other popular culture exhibitions, and toured the United States. Extensive commentary is also given regarding the popular reception of Benga's performances and his identity.
