The Tonguing Technique in The Early Baroque Era. (English)
- Abstract:
The author attempts to make practical sense of the articulation syllables which are diversely interpreted and found usually in Italian treatises from 16th and 17th centuries. The description from the sources is compared to the method actually used when teaching. It becomes clear that most of the sources of the texts were more like a summary in the style of a handbook, rather than methods which lend themselves to use in practice when teaching the techniques. The syllable sequence "re-dc" is problematic as it can be construed either as a simple tonguing technique dividing two tones or as double tonguing. The crux is that, according to the context, a repeatedly elongated "r" can be produced either with the tip of the tongue not quite rolled, at the front, immediately behind the front teeth or it can be produced at the back of the throat.
