    • Abstract:
The article focuses on the field of Middle Eastern studies in the United States. When the field of Middle Eastern studies was introduced in the 1940s and 1950s, it was part of a broader movement known as area studies. Americans did not know enough about parts of the world they would have to encounter during the Cold War, such as the Soviet Union and Latin America. The Middle East also developed as an academic field. The field of Middle Eastern studies was developed so that it should not merely understand current realities but also advocate positive changes. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Middle Eastern studies professors did not give importance to the threat posed by Islamic radicalism.
