The article discusses archaeological excavations in Mexico City, Mexico surrounding the Templo Mayor, an ancient pyramid that was the center of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. The article focuses on discoveries by archaeologist Leonardo López Luján and his team, including a monolith of the earth goddess Tlaltecuhtli, and explores the meaning behind these artifacts in regards to Aztec mythology. The article overviews Aztec history with special attention to the leaders Ahuitzotl and Moctezuma II.
