    • Abstract:
The article highlights the efforts of virologist Frank Macfarlane Burnet in finding a defense against influenza. Burnet's laboratory tests with influenza strains was complicated by the presence of at least two species of influenza virus and several strains of each. One of his discoveries is the potential of two strains of the same species to interbreed and produce offspring according to Mendelian law. He theorized the probability of influenza as one disease in which mutational changes in the virus are of greatest human importance.
