    • Abstract:
An essay is presented that discusses the Chinese opera film "A Test of Love" (1958), which is an example of a Yue opera (yueju). The opera and film contain ghosts and was banned by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, but the ban was lifted in 1957 during the Hundred Flowers Campaign. The history of the opera as performed on the stage is explored as is the way that the opera was altered so that it could be translated to film.
