      The article discusses the Cultural Revolution in China and how it impacted Chinese opera and films based on operas. During the reign of Communist leader Mao Zedong some traditional Chinese operas were censored as a result of the revolution while operas about the struggle of the Chinese proletariat were written and performed for the masses in accessible locations such as schools and factories. The form of traditional Chinese opera is considered as is what the author refers to as revolutionary opera.
