      The article refutes the notion that establishing a homeland for the Palestinians is a prerequisite for peace in the Middle East. In the author's view the Palestinian situation has little or no bearing on several other issues and conflicts in that region, past and present, including the war between Iran and Iraq, Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons, and Syria's harsh rule at home and oppression in Lebanon. He further argues that despots in the Middle East use the Arab-Israeli conflict to distract their own aggrieved peoples.
