- Abstract:
The article discusses the creation of a task force by the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) aimed at addressing the changing social and educational needs of women. The group, which has become known as the MSW Task Force, has two purposes. One is to provide leaders for the groups and workshops and second to provide an opportunity for unemployed female mental health professionals to maintain their professional identity and to increase their skills and experience. The approach to discussion groups and workshops has evolved to meet women's changing social and educational needs and in response to programming experience. The first discussion groups were instituted in 1973 when the director of women's programs was being approached by a number of women who were having difficulty adjusting to such transitions in life as motherhood, divorce, or the desire to return to employment. The YWCA setting and the description of the groups in publicity as offering an opportunity to exchange ideas and feelings about normal concerns seem to lower members anxiety about participating.
