    • Abstract:
The article examines plans by the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama to create a high-speed railroad network linking selected cities. The plan's focus on improving speeds on conventional railroad passenger trains is discussed. Political opposition to the plan is considered. The development of a pilot program high speed train between Tampa and Orlando, Florida is described. High-speed and other railroads are discussed in terms of their role in U.S. transportation in general. The pleasure and convenience of railroad travel compared to other forms of transportation is contrasted with its longer travel times.
