    • Abstract:
The article discusses the condition of the journalism industry in the United States and Great Britain, especially the financial crisis affecting most news organizations. The loss of advertising and subscription revenue and attendant loss of jobs and closure of many newspapers is discussed, as are competing views about whether the crisis threatens the role of a lively press in democratic societies, or whether the change brings opportunity. Also discussed is the effect of the Internet and other forms of new media on journalism.
