The article discusses the concept of the gene and its definition. It is suggested that the reason the gene's definition is being questioned is due to the amount of genomic data that has surfaced which includes the publication of the human genome. Biologists' study of the human genome through the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements project, which led to the identification of exons or coding regions for about 400 genes in the study, is noted. Other aspects to be considered in a gene's definition are discussed including DNA's three-dimensional structure, epigenetics, and RNA sequences.
