- Abstract: The article discusses the ecological and environmental consequences of a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico following an accident at an oil well owned by BP Plc. Large plumes of oil beneath the ocean's surface threaten damage of a character and magnitude not entirely understood. Chemical dispersants used by BP to break apart the oil have contributed to the creation of the plumes. Sharks, turtles, whales, shrimp, and squid all occupy depths where the plumes have been detected. Bluefin tuna could be particularly at risk. Biological oceanographer Andrew Juhl says organisms at the bottom of the food chain could be severely harmed. INSET: OIL AND WATER DON'T MIX.
