    • Abstract:
The article presents an interview with João Zilhão, an archaeologist at the University of Bristol, Bristol, England. The central focus of the article is on Zilhão's assertion that the Neanderthals, a type of primitive man, invented and used symbols and engaged in symbolic behavior. A number of issues are addressed in the interview including the discovery of Neanderthal jewelry and body paint in Spain, the similarities between anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals, and studies in Neanderthal cognition.
