- Abstract:
The article profiles photographer George Steinmetz, who began his career in 1979 by dropping out of Stanford University and traveling through Africa with his camera. The author spends time with Steinmetz during a photographic expedition to Algeria for a book on deserts. Places Steinmetz has visited include Iran, Israel and Niger. He uses a motorized para-glider for taking aerial photographs, for which he has been criticized as it sometimes disturbs wildlife. His photographs are presented.
