- Abstract:
In this article the author examines issues surrounding authoritarianism and the Internet. The central focus of the article is on the Internet as an agent of freedom for oppressed people and as a mechanism that could be controlled by repressive governments. A number of issues related to Internet freedom are examined including the collaboration of Internet companies with repressive governments, the role played by the Internet in China and Iran, and issues of online censorship. The author calls on the U.S. to promote Internet freedom.
