Syria and Europe: The Practice of Multipolarity. (English)

Since 2001, the United States and Europe have been stuck in the quagmire of the policy of confrontation in the Middle East, without either having reaped the expected benefits. Despite all the difficulties, Syria closed ranks in its internal political life and withstood the pressure, taking advantage of all the opportunities afforded by the changing international system. Damascus does not appear to have yielded much in its diplomatic and economic claims; if it did so, it was due to the consequences of the political change that took place in the ruling elite, not because of pressure from the West. In addition to the historical legacy of Arab nationalism in Syrian policies, we can talk of the "domestication" of neo-liberalism. This process occurs in a moment when the main western promoters of neo-liberalism have lost much of their power of coercion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Desde 2001, Estados Unidos y Europa están atorados en el lodazal que constituye la política de confrontación en el Medio Oriente, sin que ninguno de los dos haya cosechado los beneficios esperados. A pesar de todas las dificultades, Siria cerró filas en su política interna y soportó la presión aprovechando todas las oportunidades que le ofreció el cambiante sistema internacional. Damasco no parece haber cedido mucho de sus reivindicaciones diplomáticas y económicas; si lo hizo, fue por las consecuencias del cambio político ocurrido en la élite dirigente, no por la presión de Occidente. Además del legado histórico del nacionalismo árabe en la política siria, se puede hablar de la "domesticación" del neoliberalismo, proceso que tiene lugar en momentos en que los principales promotores occidentales del neoliberalismo han perdido mucho su poder de aplicarlo.
