    • Abstract:
The article discusses the use of pesticides and other decontaminants to protect and conserve artwork, cultural artifacts, and natural history and scientific collections. Such museum preservation is said to have begun in the 18th century with Alexander von Humboldt. Later protective efforts against insects and mold are detailed involving such chemicals as DDT, arsenic, and mercuric chloride, which proved to have their own unintended, dangerous, toxic, and destructive effects. More modern decontaminant practices are reviewed, including the use of dry ice, gas cleansers, lasers, and CryoBrush technologies.
