      The article discusses the deterioration of journalistic standards evident in mainstream news media coverage of the sex scandals of U.S. celebrity golfer Tiger Woods in late 2009. Increased competition from internet news and celebrity gossip outlets are seen as having driven the rash of unsourced or poorly sourced news reports about Woods's extramarital affairs and his relationship with his wife. Examples of inaccurate journalism from the celebrity news web site TMZ and elsewhere that were then repeated by mainstream newspapers and television news programs are given.
