    • Abstract:
The article discusses a Brazilian research project at the Bioethanol Science and Technology Center (CTBE), which is a facility in Brazil dedicated to the ethanol research. CTBE was commissioned by Brazil's Ministry of Science and Technology in 2005 to provide Brazil with an international competitive national laboratory which could coordinate its increased research efforts in alternative fuels. Topics include a brief overview of Brazil's sugarcane industry and the production of sugar-based ethanol. Also discussed is the investment in next-generation approaches to alternative fuels, such as cellulosic ethanol, by the U.S. and Europe that is forcing Brazil to keep pace through cellulosic research and continue its dominance as the world's leading producer and user of alternative fuels.
