- Abstract:
The article discusses the growth of democracy in Iraq and accompanying turmoil owing to a lack of compromise among its leaders. With the election processes in place, Sunnis and Shi'ites are said to work out more of their differences at the ballot box. However, University professor Hazem Shammari is quoted regarding the fragile political scene in Iraq. The Shi-ite-based governing coalition headed by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is noted, as are suspicions held by Sunnis that al-Maliki's counterterrorism unit has imprisoned opposition politicians.
