The article discusses sources of surgical wound contamination and how to prevent infections. Modes of microbial transmission include exogenous and endogenous, and the primary source for surgical site infection (SSI) is skin flora. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that one of the most common SSI pathogens is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
