- Abstract:
The author discusses her understanding of community as a subversive force against capitalism. She sees it in the phenomenon of Mari Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana, which comprises one day but is the annual culmination of efforts that go on all year and result in complex community ties. Other festivals cited include the Reclaim the Streets movement in Great Britain and the anti-World Trade Organization festivals in Seattle, Washington. She sees this as an answer to left-wing political defeatism.
