- Abstract:
The article considers Great Britain's history of drinking alcoholic beverages from the sixteenth century onwards. Great Britain's first licensing act was established in 1552 to license and limit alehouses and was soon expanded to include the licensing of wine taverns. Historic social attitudes regarding drinking and drunkenness included class distinctions over people's choice of drink, the political aspects of drinking ale or wine, and religious beliefs about imbibing are discussed. Other subjects include the impact of the gin industry on Great Britain, the 19th century temperance movement, and the 2003 Licensing Act.
