Hanoi’s educational system under French colonialism, as seen in archival sources. (English)
    • Abstract:
Discusses the effects of two educational reforms in Hanoi as introduced by two French colonial governer generals: Paul Beau (governed 1902-08) and Albert Sarraut (governed 1911-14; 1917-19). These reforms, which were implemented in the years 1906–16 and 1917–29, were in accord with the French strategy of developing Hanoi into the "Capital of Tonkin" as well as the "Capital of the Indochinese Federation." Hanoi underwent many changes under these new policies, which could be seen in the way state-run and private schools operated up to the end of World War II and the outbreak of the August Revolution in 1945. Among the accomplishments of the reforms was the integration of the Hanoi Professional School into a system of industrial education. [ABSTRACT FROM CONTRIBUTOR]
