The article presents the text of a speech given by illustrator David Small on June 17, 2001 in acceptance of the 2001 Caldecott Medal from the American Library Association for the book "So You Want to Be President?" In the speech, Small thanks several writers and associates that he has worked with during his career. He also discusses his working process, previous books he has illustrated, and some of his childhood experiences.
