Administration and Leadership in Student Affairs, Actualizing Student Development in Higher Education. Theodore K. Miller, Roger B. Winston, Jr., and William R. Mendenhall. Accelerated Development, Inc., Muncie, Indiana, 1983. The authors maintain that the situation on campuses across the country mirrors the confusion surrounding the social, economic, and political problems of American life in general. In another sense the situation reflects the self-doubt and failing leadership of institutions of higher learning. The book emphasizes administration and leadership in student affairs focused on actualizing student development. It provides important guidelines for making significant contributions to the institution's own developmental process. The first two parts, 11 chapters, represent the theoretical foundations of student affairs. The remainder of the 20 chapters deal with "Strategies for Administration and Leadership." The real strength of this book comes from the fact that each chapter is written by different individuals; so that one has in a single text the views of many of the contemporary experts in the management arena. Throughout the book one finds references to management by objectives and systems analysis, terms that have become watchwords in current administration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
