An encyclopedia entry for German-American anthropologist Franz Boas is presented. Born in Minden, Prussia on July 9, 1858, Boas completed a doctorate at the University of Kiel. He studied life among the Inuit in Baffin Island in 1883. He served as the first professor of anthropology at Columbia University. "The Mind of Primitive Man" and "Anthropology and Modern Life" are some of his most notable books. He proposed a broad approach to studying the relative merits of the world's various societies.
