The author focuses on literacy advocacy (LA), reading. She notes that a literate nation helps maintain democratic ideals, such as freedom of speech, expression and press. She cites the importance of libraries in making the U.S. literate and adds that the foundation of democracy is a literate nation. At least 90 million adults in the nation read at or below basic literacy levels, according to the results of the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) in 2003.
