    • Abstract:
The article explores the late Mississippian period in Illinois. This period extends from 1300 A.D. until the arrival of French explorers in 1673, wherein no written records pertaining to the state was present, but only through oral tradition and by artifacts. It highlights the several possibilities that led to the loss of Mississippian culture including tribal conflict, the decrease of human population and the lack of permanent settlement.
