      The article looks at the development of surgical techniques for mitral valve repair. It cites the advantages of mitral valve repair over prosthetic replacement for degenerative mitral insufficiency, including lower early and late mortality rates. It is noted that marked improvement in the conservative treatment of the more complex degenerative lesions of such valves was attributed to technical innovations in surgery and in echocardiography. It also provides details of how the procedure is performed.
