- Abstract:
This article describes how China has cornered the market for rare earth elements. Rare earth elements are indispensable in the construction of such things as headphones, smart bombs, euro banknotes, and batteries. China encouraged the development of rare earth mines in the 1980s and priced U.S. mines out of business so that 95 percent of the elements come from China. China is expected to use nearly all of its rare earth product in the future and it has been stockpiling and limiting exports.
