The article discusses a study using a Pavlovian conditioning test which found that patients diagnosed as being in a vegetative state (VS) are in fact minimally conscious (MS). It provides an overview of the experiment by Tristan Bekinschtein of the Medical Research Council's Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, England which investigated the response of MCS and VS patients to Pavlovian test. It describes the response of MCS and VS patients which confirmed that they can learn making new associations despite their consciousness disorders.
