The article discusses the contributions of paediatrician Charles West to research on language acquisition in children. West, who founded the Great Ormond Street paediatric hospital and promoted specialized medical treatment for children, gave a lecture on language delays and disorders in children. Research by physician Paul Broca on aphasia and naturalist Charles Darwin on language skills in children is noted. West described how children come to understand and use language and emphasized the importance of parents' participation in language acquisition. Research by psychologist James Sully and physician Francis Warner on child language skills is discussed.
