      The article discusses the involvement of journalist Willem Oltmans in a diplomatic dispute between the Netherlands and Indonesia regarding control over West New Guinea. Oltmans recommended that West New Guinea be transferred to Indonesia to improve relations between the countries. Speculation regarding Oltmans' sympathy for former Indonesian president Sukarno is noted. The author suggests that ambiguity regarding Oltmans' motives and views, negative public opinion regarding his reputation and personality and Dutch attitudes prevented him from influencing Dutch policy.
