    • Abstract:
In discussing books by their colleagues, German historians generally ignore the publishers' contribution to these products. Reviews evaluate the arguments of the authors. Yet actually publishers decided whether these books exist at all. Many titles in contemporary historiography were even initiated by and others never appeared due to publishers. The first part of the essay shows that publishers and literary editors acted as "gatekeepers" and exerted a twofold influence on contemporary historiography: Directly by their decisions regarding individual titles and series, but especially indirectly through the structures they provided for the historical field, which shaped the patterns of perception of historians. The second part illustrates this twofold influence of the publishers according to the cycles of the book trade of publications on contemporary history since 1945. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
