    • Abstract:
The article explores the relationship between prison conditions and prisoners' writings during the early modern period in England. The author focuses on poetry and psalms written by prisoners and considers how such writings portray the social disorder of the period. Some of the writings considered include the 1650s manuscript of royalist Sir Walter Slingsby written while he was held in the Tower of London; the 1640s manuscript created by lawyer and Speaker of the House of Commons Sir John Glanville while he was held in the Tower of London; and the book "Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison," by Michel Foucault, translated by Alan Sheridan.
