ISLAMISM IN THE EUROPEAN SOCIETIES: THE MYTHS OF MUSLIM COMMUNITY, CIVILIZATIONS' DIALOGUE AND MODERATE ISLAM.

In this essay, we are mostly interested in Islamism as a phenomenon that affects the European epistemic community dealing with security issues. As Raymond Aron often remarked, the work of the political scientist is about destroying the myths that surround both politicians and intellectuals. According to this, we aim to clarify the language and the narratives used in the current debate on European Islamism. Hence, we will divide our essay into three parts: codification of the general characteristics of Islamism as an ideology; description of how European Islamism acts among European societies; and finally we develop an analytical perspective on the issue, by refusing the dominant paradigm, which we believe too biased by an excess of communitarian and religious identity. Neste ensaio, o islamismo interessa-nos enquanto fenómeno que afecta a comunidade epistémica europeia que lida com questões de segurança. Como salientava Raymond Aron, a tarefa do cientista político é destruir os mitos que eirculam entre políticos e intelectuais. Neste sentido, procuramos aqui clarificar o vocabulário e as narrativas utilizadas no debate político sobre o islamismo europeu. Na prossecução desse objectivo, dividimos o ensaio em três partes: codificação das características gerais do islamismo como ideologia; descrição da acção do islamismo europeu que actua no interior das sociedades europeias; dentro das considerações finais, desenvolvemos uma perspectiva analítica sobre esta questão, recusando o paradigma dominante marcado pelo excesso de identidade comunitária e religiosa.
