    • Abstract:
The article discusses the American Jeremiad tradition and the rhetorical strategy that is used by opponents of same-sex marriage to argue against expanding marriage rights. Of particular interest is the multiracial coalition politics of these religion-based groups and the author looks at several that were in New York, Massachusetts, and Colorado. The work of Stokeley Carmichael and Charles Hamilton on multiracial coalitions is discussed. It is noted that jeremiads have been traditionally used differently by African Americans and Caucasians. Statistics are provided about the races and religions of those who do not support same-sex marriage in the U.S.
