      Proposes that menopause and old age have been human hallmarks and have played a decisive role in human evolution, despite arguments that these are artifacts of modern living conditions. Observations of human societies in New Guinea, where the conditions of the elderly differ from that of Westerners in that they are the repositories of knowledge; Conclusion that the elderly's value to survival was the selective factor behind the evolution of human senescence and menopause.
