- Abstract:
The article reports on the support by Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in Great Britain, for alternatives to the use of soils containing peat, and called for clearer labeling of compost. Benn asserted that peat harvested for gardening damages wildlife habitats and contributes to climate change. DEFRA scientists estimated that peat for garden mixes released almost half a million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year.
