    • Abstract:
The article discusses the efforts of Chinese historian Jin Yufu (1887-1962) to overcome the scholarly divisions developing in Chinese academia in the 1920s, broadly described as the "Southern" versus "Northern" styles of academic study, and involving differences between traditional and modern approaches. Jin Yufu's education at Beijing University and work as head of the history department at Central University are discussed, as is the influence of the New Culture Movement. Jin Yufu is seen as a moderate who advocated blending the best elements of competing approaches.
